The highest production of cherries in the province of alicante is in the area protected by the geographical indication 'cherries of the mountain of alicante' This production area has special agroclimatic characteristics for cherry cultivation. The main characteristics are being one of the highest mountainous relief of the Valencian community, are soils of high calcium carbonate content and scarcity of organic matter, a temperate Mediterranean climate, with cold temperatures and more rainfall than in the rest of community. The average annual temperature is between 13 and 15.5ºc, with average annual precipitation between 350-650 mm.
